Next March is shaping up to be a packed month for Austin, both event-wise and people-wise, with the release of South by Southwest and spring break schedules.

According to Axios Austin, SXSW and area schools' spring break will take place in different weeks for the first time since 2019. SXSW will run from March 7-15, while UT Austin, St. Edward's University, Austin Community College and Austin ISD schools will have spring break from March 17-21.

The issue with these misaligning schedules lies within population control and volunteer availability. According to Axios, having SXSW and spring break at the same time leads to a less crowded city, and if students are in school during SXSW, that leaves the festival without student volunteers.

"SXSW chooses its dates many years in advance and contracts with many vendors up to three years in advance," a SXSW spokesperson told Axios via email. "We are still discussing with outside partners and stakeholders, including the schools, on 2025 date alignment."

Austin Community College told Axios there are no plans to change the school's spring break dates, as it falls in the middle of the spring semester and aligns with Austin ISD for students taking dual credit.

Also, UT Austin told Axios that the university "recommended aligning with area school districts and ACC because of the number of students who need their spring break to fall in line with other schools."
